After twelve years of theater work in San Francisco and the Bay Area, I was hijacked by a wave and the impulse to carve stone, and at 28 my life took a path I did not anticipate.
Thirty plus years later, I am still exploring the landscape of the heart and mind through the means of carving stone and making marks on paper.
I am a totem maker sort of sculptor rather than a monument maker: I prefer to make small, intimate pieces.
I have a few diverse directions that I travel simultaneously in both sculpting and drawing.
The Solar Markers, for example, come from a much different space than the “touchy/feely” pieces that enjoy the celebration of form for it’s own sake.
I suppose that this is much the same as my enjoying the work of both Henry Moore and David Smith.
Some pieces come from planning. Some come from letting my hands find the form and letting them surprise my mind. It depends on how I feel.
Usually I have more than one piece in process. When I get stumped, I let my unconscious mind work on it for a spell and return later with a new perspective.
I like to surprise myself. Working directly in stone allows this to happen more often than planning pieces in another medium (plaster or clay, for instance) and copying them later.
